Digital and intelligent sensors have long been the standard for inline sensors for liquid analysis. Nearly 20 years ago, Mettler Toledo pioneered the first intelligent pH electrodes! The Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM) concept was born. Today ISM has grown into a complete platform for in-line and online liquid analyzers, from sensors for pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity and ozone to full-fledged analyzers for TOC, sodium, silica and phosphate.
ISM sensors, by their digitization, are the answer to the classic analog electrodes. Who doesn't remember the problems with cables and moisture with the old pH or oxygen sensors? The intelligence is in the head. The measurement signal is digitized in the head of the sensor. Only the digital signal is sent over the cable to the measuring transducer (transmitter). This makes the signal insensitive to interference from ground potentials, stray currents, electromagnetic waves and damp cables and connectors.
By building intelligence and memory into sensors, it is possible to store the calibration data in the sensor head. For this reason, you can use the sensor immediately without calibration (the factory calibration is in the memory) which saves a lot of time during startup and commissioning. Because the sensors are digital, you can connect them via USB to a PC and calibrate them with the ISM Core software package. And that leads to unprecedented possibilities.
When it comes to digitalization and intelligence, algorithms that make predictions are not far away. With ISM sensors and analyzers, it is no different. Based on measured values, calibration data and history, diagnostics and some specific parameters, the ISM indicates the remaining expected lifetime (DLI, Dynamic Lifetime Indicator).
ISM has long since ceased to be the one digital pH electrode. It is a total solution for inline and online analyzers and sensors with which you make measurement results reliable, reduce maintenance, save costs and optimize the production process in one move.
The concept rests on three pillars: Measure, Integrate and Manage. ISM sensors provide interference-free measurements with comprehensive diagnostic capabilities (Measure). Analyzers and measurement transducers provide integration, diagnosis and communication (Integrate), while the ISM Core software helps you with (predictive) maintenance, tracking the status of the sensors and analyzers, keeping a historical record and delivering documentation (Manage).
