The VEGAPULS is an 80 GHz radar level meter with a high dynamic range: 120 dB. The device is ideally suited for level measurement of foaming products.
Common sensors for liquids operate at 90 dB. This can attenuate the signal if foaming occurs. However, with a dynamic range of 120 dB, it is possible to measure the liquid surface through the foam. A high dynamic range is also desirable when measuring materials with low dielectric constant (DC < 2). Thus, the VEGAPULS can make reliable measurements for cocoa beans and gypsum (DC = 1.8), lime and coffee (DC = 1.5), fiberglass powder and wood chips (DC = 1.1) and even polystyrene foam or Styropor (DC = 1.03). The high dynamic range additionally offers an advantage when there is condensation or fouling on the antenna.
